Obituary of Gurmej Kaur Bains

On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, Gurmej Kaur Bains passed away at the age of 88, surrounded by her loving family. Gurmej was born on October 10, 1934, in Jandiala, Punjab to Charan and Rukman Johl. She was the fourth of five children. She married Surinder Bains at the age of 19 and obtained her Master's Degree in Punjabi from the University of Punjab in Chandigarh at the age of 24. She worked as a teacher. They immigrated to the United States in 1972, and Gurmej has been a resident of Yuba City for 51 years. She started working at Sunsweet, Inc. in Yuba City, California in 1975. She worked there for 42 years, before retiring in 2017. Gurmej is survived by her husband, Surinder Bains; grandson, Jagger Bains; granddaughter, Jaeden Bains; and a number of loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her son, Rajwinder Bains; her brother Harbhajan Johl; and her sisters, Jaswant Takhar, Naseeb Shergill, and Baldev Atwal. She will be remembered for her strength, her tenacity, and her indomitable spirit. Her family is inspired by her love, wisdom, and generosity. Although small in stature, this woman carried the heart of a tiger. Services will be held Sunday, February 5, 2023, at 11:00 am at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, 817 Almond Street, Yuba City, CA. Prayer services will follow at Tierra Buena Sikh Temple, 2468 Tierra Buena Road, Yuba City, CA.
