Nadene Hilbers

Obituary of Nadene Ellen Hilbers

Nadene Ellen Hilbers, was the only child of Gordon and Elsie Clegg. She was born on June 25, 1932, and passed on October 22, 2023, at The Fountains in Yuba City, CA. Nadene's family moved from Live Oak, CA, to Gridley, CA, in 1936, when her parents bought the East Gridley Market from the Stowe Family which was located on the corner of Oroville/Gridley Hwy. and Larkin Rd. Also located next to the Sacramento Northern Rail Depot. Her mother, Elsie, sent young Nadene to Chico, CA, (where she grew up) via the Sacramento/Northern Railroad for kindergarten. She stayed with her Aunt Sis during the week and rode the train home on the weekends. After her father died in 1949, her mother decided to build some rentals next to the market to help with living expenses. She hired a carpenter from Yuba City named Carl Hilbers to do the construction. Carl brought his son Leroy to help. It was love at first site. Leroy and Nadene dated for the next 5 years during which time Nadene attended and graduated from Highland's Nursing School in Oakland, CA, as a registered nurse. Leroy served in the Army during that time. Shortly after marriage, Leroy and Nadene moved into their new home (built by Leroy) on Patton Ave. in Yuba City. During that time, Nadene began her nursing career at Rideout Hospital in Marysville, CA. Shortly after that, Lori arrived on May 8, 1956. Kurt arrived February 10, 1958. Then Larry on July 18, 1959, all the while maintaining her family and career at Rideout Hospital. A few years later, Glenn arrived on December 19, 1962, and she decided it was time to move from the hospital to the doctor's office, primarily to have more regular working hours and to be with her family. She began working for Dr. Wright on Del Norte Ave. then a few years later, moved to Marysville with Dr. Berry and remained there for the next 10 years. In 1968, Leroy built a subdivision in Gridley (behind the East Gridley Market). He built 2 houses, sold one and the other stayed on the market for over a year. Bills had to be paid. They sold their house on Patton Ave. and moved to Gridley in 1970. Nadene was a devoted Christian wife and mother. She always put her children first. She taught them the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She was a true proverbs Ch. 31 Verses 10-31 woman. During their childhood, she was an amazing mother. She always held a full-time job as an RN and at the same time managed the household. They attended church on Sundays and always ate dinner together as a family. She cooked breakfast and made their lunches when we weren't eating at school. Nadene was preceded in death by her father, Gordon Clegg; her mother, Elsie McLain; and her husband, Leroy Hilbers. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Maskell; her sons, Kurt Hilbers (Mary), Larry Hilbers (Joan), Glenn Hilbers (Lisa); 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday, November 1, 2023, 11am at First Lutheran Church, 850 Cooper Ave., Yuba City. The Celebration of Life will immediately follow service at The Plaza Room in Hillcrest Plaza.
